Molybdenum market update on July 3, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market continues to maintain an upward trend, mainly reflected in the continuous increase in molybdenum raw material prices, rising downstream inquiries, and moderate market transactions. Today, the prices of molybdenum concentrate and molybdenum iron are approximately 3,830 yuan/ton-degree and 244,000 yuan/ton, respectively.
In the molybdenum concentrate market, the trading atmosphere is active. Supported by the recent upward fluctuation of overseas molybdenum prices and strong downstream demand, molybdenum concentrate prices have continuously increased. However, against this backdrop, suppliers' awareness of taking profits has also enhanced.
The molybdenum iron market generally remains under pressure. Although molybdenum iron manufacturers have raised their quotations driven by the rising prices of molybdenum concentrate, the increase in quotations is smaller than the increase in costs, leading suppliers to face significant risks of cost-revenue inversion. Recently, steel enterprises that have entered the market for molybdenum iron bidding include Jiyuan Iron and Steel, Tsingshan Holding Group, Hengyang Valin Steel Pipe, etc.
In the molybdenum chemical and its products market, a strong wait-and-see atmosphere prevails. With the high sentiment of reluctance to sell and bullish expectations in the raw material market, and terminal customers mainly adopting demand-based procurement, goods holders show insufficient confidence in raising prices. Currently, the prices of sodium molybdate and ammonium heptamolybdate are consolidating at around 169,000 yuan/ton and 237,000 yuan/ton, respectively.
In terms of news, data from the World Stainless Steel Association shows that global stainless steel crude steel production in the first quarter of 2025 was 15.547 million tons, increasing by 6.2% year on year and decreasing by 6.0% quarter on quarter. Among them, stainless steel production in Europe was 1.608 million tons, increasing by 2.9% and 15.4% year on year and quarter on quarter, respectively; production in the United States was 553,000 tons, increasing by 8.6% and 25.4% year on year and quarter on quarter; production in China was 9.624 million tons, increasing by 11.2% year on year and decreasing by 10.4% quarter on quarter; production in Asia (excluding China and South Korea) was 1.78 million tons, decreasing by 3.3% and 7.7% year on year and quarter on quarter; and production in other countries (Brazil, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Indonesia) was 1.982 million tons, decreasing by 4.5% and 3.0% year on year and quarter on quarter.
